Dear Project CHOICES . . .

y name is Annie Niswander. I am 18 years old. I am a senior
at Mahomet-Seymour High school in Mahomet, Illinois. I
have been in regular classes in my school all the time
since I started school in kindergarten. And I have Down
Syndrome.
When I was in the third grade, Project
CHOICES came to my school. They had meetings with the
teachers and my Mom got to go too. Project CHOICES helped
the teachers learn lots of things. They helped the teachers
make sure that I could do my work and learn a lot in my
classes.
Sometimes
I have two teachers in my class. All the kids like that,
because they can get more help when they need it. I like
it better when other kids help me instead of the teacher.
I like to help sometimes too.
I learned a lot in school. I learned
about history and geography. I got to learn about Egypt
and the pyramids, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln.
In math class, I learned to use a calculator to help me
solve problems. I am very good on the calculator. In English
class, my favorite part was reading plays by Shakespeare.
Sometimes I got to listen to it on a tape. Sometimes we
acted it out in class. My favorite is A Midsummer's Night
Dream.
During my study halls, I do jobs in
the school. Last year I worked in the high school library.
This year I'm working in the office. Then, during the
summer, I got to work in the public library in Mahomet.
My friends and I are very, very busy.
I like to go to the football games and basketball games
and the dances. I went to the Prom and stayed up until
5:00 in the morning! I am a thespian too. I have been
in almost all the school plays and musicals. It is a lot
of fun.
When I graduate from high school, I
would like to do a lot of things. I want to get a job
and get a paycheck. I could work for Project CHOICES too.
Maybe I will take classes at college. I hope Project CHOICES
will come and help the teachers at the college.
Thank you, Project CHOICES, for helping
my teachers to teach me better. You are the greatest!
Your friend,
