Evolution of Project CHOICES...Moving Forward

Project
CHOICES (Children Have Opportunities in Integrated Community EnviromentS) was created to assist schools in moving toward Least Restrictive Environments.

Goals
Goal was to help Illinois school districts develop integrated educational opportunities in regular schools for students ages 6-21 with severe disabilities.

Project
Early CHOICES was created.

Goals
Goal was to provide funding and technical support for integrating children ages 3-5 with identified delays into school and community programs.

Project CHOICES began the 3-year grant process of planning, implementation, and system change for both CHOICES and Early CHOICES sites.

Goals
The goal changed to "integrate or include students with moderate or severe disabilities.

Project
CHOICES name changed to reflect change in mission: Children Have Opportunities in Inclusive Community Enviroments and Schools.

Consultants were restructured into 4 regional teams working throughout Illinois. Each team had a parent member and members with early childhood, special education, general education and/or administrative experiences.

Goals
Belief Statement created: The purpose of Project CHOICES is to assist communities and school districts in developing processes for changing their systems to educate all students together. To achieve this purpose, a commitment to effective education and shared decision making, involving all the stakeholders, is essential.

Goals
Project CHOICES began changing from a 3-year grant process, to offering technical assistance to any school district in Illinois who submitted a request.

Project
Developed long-term collaborative agreements with districts based on the goals from the Illinois State Board of Education’s Continuous Improvement Plan.

Goals
Mission Statement created: Project CHOICES exists to empower communities and school districts in developing processes for changing their systems so they are able to successfully educate all students, at all levels, together.

Project
ISBE developed IS-TAC (Illinois Statewide Technical Assistance Center). Members of IS-TAC are Project CHOICES (Children Have Opportunities in Inclusive Community Environments and Schools), PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports), IATTAP (Illinois Autism Training and Technical Assistance Project), and PEP (Parent Education Partnership). A fee for service was established for IS-TAC services.

Goals
Six (6) Targets were developed to identify a framework for creating a unified school district. Project CHOICES began gathering LRE (Least Restrictive Environment) and SIMEO (Systematic Information Management for Educational Outcomes) data to examine the impact of the support provided to school districts and communities.
